ROADTRIP TO THE 40TH REUNION:
DISPATCHES FROM THE TYPEWRITERS OF
MADISON, HOLDER, WITHERSPOON AND BLAIR
LETTER #4 April 2018
Dear Classmates,
It’s Holdie the Feline again happy to share a crazy story with you!
I attended Alumni Day this year (a wonderful day btw) and stayed at the Nassau Inn. It was great
to stay at the Inn, so close to campus! And boy has Downtown Princeton
changed since our days as Undergraduates. But Alchemist and Barrister is
still there but lots and lots of new stores and restaurants. Princeton
has clearly become a destination town, with good reason – all those
tigers and gothic spires to look at!
But
I digress. Alumni Day is a really fun day. Interesting lectures and
discussions (one was a particularly interesting albeit terrifying
seminar on climate change – Princeton of course leading the science to
address it). There’s a great luncheon and then inspiring awards to both
graduate and undergraduate students who are doing breakthrough,
pioneering work in both social science and engineering fields.
But
the real highlight is the Service of Remembrance that is Princeton Pomp
and Circumstance at its finest. The service in the Chapel honors all
alumni, faculty and staff who passed away in the past year. I didn’t
realize there is a Club of deceased Princetonians and one of my friends
remarked, “yeah and it’s a non-selective Club”!
So,
here’s my story. When I woke up on Sunday morning, it was the result of
an incredibly vivid dream inspired by being so close to campus. The
dream was Spring term Senior year and I was woefully behind on my
thesis. I started it too late and, by April, it was obvious I wouldn’t
have it done in time to graduate. So I met with my Professor (Jack
Armstrong) and he agreed I wouldn’t be able to finish it so we made a
plan to complete it over the summer. Then I had to call my parents to
tell them I wouldn’t be graduating – they weren’t happy!
I
used to have “academic stress” dreams in my 20’s but grew out of them.
Only to have the dream return because of staying at Nassau Inn.
Its funny though, in reality, I did get the thesis done in time, graduated on time and did not need to call my parents!
While
our letters are the Roadtrip to the 40th Reunion next year, consider
coming to our 39th and reconnect with ’79 and‘78ers! Off year reunions
are a blast and we plan a special luncheon on Saturday at Dial Lodge
prior to the P-rade!
Our 39th Reunion!
