P is for Princeton and Participation!

Each year, about 60% of all Princeton alumni contribute to Annual Giving. Extraordinarily, almost 1,100 members of the graduating class of 2018 have pledged to Annual Giving. These are off-the-chart results. Our peer academic institutions participate at rates more than 20 points below Princeton. The reasons are powerful:

  • When seniors were asked why they stand behind Annual Giving so strongly, a primary reason is the spirit and loyalty of Princeton's alumni.
  • Another reason is Princeton's leading financial aid program - in which 60% of the class receive grants that average $51,000 per year - and for which undergraduates are forever grateful and eager to "give back" themselves.
  • A third reason is Princeton's ability to attract the best faculty. One prime example is Matthew Desmond, Professor of Sociology and the principal investigator of The Eviction Lab. Desmond researches poverty in America, city life, housing insecurity, public policy and racial inequality. He won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction in a book that documented his findings. Annual Giving funds enabled Princeton to attract Desmond to campus.
