Dear Class of 1979 Family,
Reunions
provide us with a special opportunity to connect, commune, learn and
have fun! We continue the tradition on our 41st Reunion—you guessed
it—virtually-- with several exciting ‘79 Family events on Saturday, May 30.
In addition to the Virtual P-rade at 2 PM and a live concert at 7 PM,
we have two classmates at the top of their fields joining us to chat
over coffee and Zoom. Links to register and attend the talks, which will
stream as Zoom webinars, will be posted on Reunions 2020 website
and our class Facebook page. The 75-minute long sessions feature live
streaming conversations, followed by an opportunity for you to pose your
questions on-line and have them answered live. Here are the details:
Saturday, May 30 @ 10:00 AM ET “The Covid19 Pandemic: Perspectives from the CDC”. We are delighted to host classmate Steve Redd ’79, Deputy Director for Public Health Service and Implementation Science at the Centers for Disease Control, in a moderated discussion with Henry C. Maguire MD ’79.
Steve has worked at the CDC for over 30 years and has led CDC response
teams for several potential public health threats including the H1N1
pandemic in 2009 and Ebola outbreaks in West Africa in 2014. He is
currently working in Washington DC for the CDC addressing the Covid19
pandemic. Henry is the former Director of Pediatric Neurology, Geisinger
Medical Center.
Saturday, May 30 @ 11:30 AM ET “Telling True Tales: Author Josh Hammer Discusses Adventure Non-Fiction Writing”. We are thrilled to be sitting down with Josh Hammer ‘79, long-time Newsweek bureau chief and author of NYT best seller “The
Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu” and the recently published “The Falcon
Thief: A True Tale of Adventure, Treachery and the Hunt for the Perfect
Bird”. Josh has also published articles in periodicals including
The Atlantic, The New Yorker, NYT Magazine, GQ, and National Geographic
and Outside. Josh will discuss his two recent books, his influences and
his globe-spanning creative process with moderator (and fan!) class co-secretary Kathryn Reimann.
End your day with us at 7:00 PM ET for a live concert by RAM Haiti as band leader Richard Morse ’79
and Haiti’s preeminent band from Port-au-Prince “intertwine ancient
folkloric polyrhythms, punk rock guitar riffs and swinging Caribbean
keyboard melodies” to get us all dancing in our living rooms. Log in join the party!
In
addition, your officers had fun answering a University request to
create a traditional and enthusiastic Locomotive to salute the Great
Class of 2020: watch it here.
Finally,
stay tuned for information on the upcoming release of the Class of 1979
Virtual Reggae Band performing Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds, as well
as more ’79 “Zoomtail” sessions.
