First Class of 1979 Trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos

Class of 1979

February 12, 2021

Hi Classmates!

The idea for our first formal Class of 1979 Trip—Destination: Ecuador and the Galapagos!—came out of discussion among your class officers about how much we missed travel. A Galapagos trip that Phil and Kathryn had planned was put on hold twice due to the pandemic. As others expressed interest in joining, we thought, why not combine two things we love--seeing other ‘79ers, and travel? Hopefully the third try will be the charm, and in 2022, we will be on our way. Here are the details, assuming all is safe and pandemic-free.

After traveling to Ecuador from our respective locations, we meet up in Guayaquil or Quito on the evening of Tuesday, May 10, 2022, to get ready for our early morning flight to Baltra on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. In Baltra, we will board The Coral, a 36-guest capacity ship for a five-day/four-night exploration of the Galapagos, organized by Klein Tours. (Klein came highly recommended, and has been terrific about postponements and rescheduling without penalty based on our level of concern about the pandemic.)

The really cool thing about Klein Tours is that the ship is small. If we have 30 79ers, including guests, the ship will be exclusively ours! All-inclusive (meals, etc.) pricing for the five day / four night cruise:

Junior Cabin Double
Junior Cabin Single
Standard Plus Double
Standard Plus Single
Standard Double
Standard Single

$5,351

$4,012

$4,692

$3,519

$3,789

$2,841

These are the charter prices reflecting a 30% discount compared to regular pricing. The way charter pricing works is we have to pay a total of $79,000 regardless of the mix of doubles and singles. This means the actual cost may be a bit higher or lower (+/-5%) depending on numbers attending.

The round-trip flight from Quito / Guayaquil to Baltra is $495.

There will also be an optional add-on trip featuring a three-day or so exploration of Ecuador, tentatively a Mindo Cloud Forest Tour.

Optional add-on trip

So far, we have four intrepid guests booked, Judy Hueber, Dave Hueber, Kathryn Reimann and me.

Please contact me if you are interested and would like more details. A 20% deposit is required by May 1, 2021 to reserve your spot on the ship.  Please write to me and I’ll provide booking details and connect you to the tour operator so our group stays together.

Join us on our first ’79 “Family Vacation”!
