His latest book, with co-author Rex Hesner, is Funny Stuff: How Great Cartoonists Make Great Cartoons. Bob Mankoff, former cartoon editor of The New Yorker, wrote the foreword. Funny Stuff is an insider’s look at how great cartoons are created. Types of humor, illustration styles, caption writing, and more are covered. The book also includes more than 100 great cartoons that illustrate these concepts, plus pages from the personal sketchbooks of legendary cartoonists. Mankoff has described the book as "a must for people who love the single-panel cartoon form and a great primer for aspiring cartoonists." The book is “delightful, engaging, and illuminating,” according to New Yorker cartoonist and best-selling author, Roz Chast.

Phil's joke books, What You Don’t Know About Turning 50 and the sequel on turning 60, have sold 175,000 copies to date. Phil also writes short humor pieces for online and print publications. He was a guest cartoonist at the Charles Schulz Museum and the San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum.
