Funny Stuff from the Classroom, to the Courtroom, to the Cartoon World: A Conversation with Phil Witte '79 Phil is a cartoonist and author. His interest in cartooning started at a very young age. After a diversion, which included Princeton, law school, and a career in law, he became a full-time author and cartoonist. His cartoons have appeared in dozens of publications in the U.S. and U.K., including The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Reader’s Digest, San Francisco Chronicle, The Times of London, and, in collaboration, The New Yorker. He is also the creator of the class logo we have used since its introduction at our 40th reunion.
His latest book, with co-author Rex Hesner, is Funny Stuff: How Great Cartoonists Make Great Cartoons. Bob Mankoff, former cartoon editor of The New Yorker, wrote the foreword. Funny Stuff is an insider’s look at how great cartoons are created. Types of humor, illustration styles, caption writing, and more are covered. The book also includes more than 100 great cartoons that illustrate these concepts, plus pages from the personal sketchbooks of legendary cartoonists. Mankoff has described the book as "a must for people who love the single-panel cartoon form and a great primer for aspiring cartoonists." The book is “delightful, engaging, and illuminating,” according to New Yorker cartoonist and best-selling author, Roz Chast.
Phil's joke books, What You Don’t Know About Turning 50 and the sequel on turning 60, have sold 175,000 copies to date. Phil also writes short humor pieces for online and print publications. He was a guest cartoonist at the Charles Schulz Museum and the San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum.
Recently, Phil described his prior career to a reunion audience as “a brief, 33-year stint as a lawyer.” We think you will greatly enjoy hearing about Phil’s latest effort, as well as his journey from Princeton, to litigation, to humor and cartoons.

Funny Stuff: How Great Cartoonists Make Great Cartoons -- Published: July 16, 2024 Philip Witte - Books - Co-Author Funny Stuff is a tribute to a unique art form: the single-panel gag cartoon. It looks at why so many of us enjoy cartoons, and what makes for a great cartoon. Authors Phil Witte and Rex Hesner consider how cartoonists can present a complex or odd scenario that we immediately grasp, and what enables us to “get” the humor in a flash. Based on interviews with cartoonist legends—Roz Chast, Sam Gross, Harry Bliss, Joe Dator, Mick Stevens, and many others—Funny Stuff will show how cartoons reveal much about the psyches of their creators. For instance: Roz Chast, known for her neurotic cartoon characters, feared she might die taking a bath because the tub could crash through the floor.
The text is abundant with cartoons illustrating the observations of Witte and Hesner. They point to cartoonists who rely on common situations (the desert island, Garden of Eden, hell) and stock characters (the pirate, business executive, scientist), as well as cartoonists who subvert these conventions. They analyze types of humor: absurd, dark, ironic, satirical. They address how the wording of a caption can mean the difference between a cartoon succeeding and almost succeeding, and the extra degree of difficulty required of the caption-less cartoon. They discuss cartooning as an art form, and specifically how the artwork of the best cartoons supports the humor. [Amazon] Link

Live in Suspense -- Published: July 1, 2023 David Groff - Books - Author/Writer In Live in Suspense, David Groff writes about living between beginnings and endings, about always expecting the next mortal thing to happen. That suspenseful place can be painful and grievous, but also joyous; these poems both resist those tensions and find rest in them. In the elegies of Live in Suspense, Groff contends with his late mother, whose legacy she would have her son revise and resolve; a minister-father who wrestled with his own destiny and would have his son save him; and friends and lovers lost to HIV and other tribulations, "with their catcalls and canticles." As he did in his previous books, Groff writes again of his husband Clay and living with the vagaries of the virus. In poems that ask what it means to love someone and die anyway, Live in Suspense explores our connections with the irksomely finite people we care for; how we might shoulder past our guilt and grief to sidle into significance; how we might be generative if not procreative; how we might reweave our beliefs into new garments that warm us; and how ultimately we might consent to suspense--to "step away from all signs, .../shedding lexicons" and matter simply as matter. Kelley’s recent addictive shows include “Big Little Lies” and “The Undoing,” so I feel like this one has promise. [NY Times] Link

TigerTalks: Search Fund: An Alternative Path to Entrepreneurship -- February 28, 2024 Moderator: Don Seitz, ’79. A search fund is an investment vehicle in which the entrepreneur (or team) initially raises a small pool of capital from several investors to fund a search (of up to 24 months) for a suitable small business to acquire. Typically, these are usually a family business without a clear succession plan and/or in need of fresh capital and leadership to take the company to the next level. Upon identifying the best opportunity, the search fund entrepreneur returns to the original group of investors to raise additional capital to acquire the business and subsequently lead it as the CEO. Unlike traditional private equity, the search fund entrepreneur focuses all efforts on operating this single business, working with its employees, customers, and suppliers to create organic growth and improve the efficiency of internal operations. The higher the return for the investors, the greater the ownership the search fund entrepreneur earns in the shares of the acquired company, aligning incentives between investors and operators better than traditional venture capital or private equity.
